Geologic soil reports are required as part of our plans that we will submit to the County of Santa Cruz Planning department. These reports describe the underlying soil conditions at each of our proposed building locations. The soil engineers came to the Ashram with a drilling machine that drilled 6 inch diameter holes into the ground down to 30 feet deep. From the holes, they extracted samples of the soil, which they then analyzed in their lab. From this analysis they determined the proper type and depth of the cement foundation for each building.
Drilling for the soil samples:
An excerpt from their report:
“Primary geotechnical concerns at the delineated building envelopes include strong seismic shaking, adequate bearing support for foundations, and appropriate control of surface runoff. Based upon our subsurface investigation, we recommend the proposed structures be supported by drilled pier and grade beam foundation systems. Due to the loose near surface soils and shallow groundwater we anticipate portion of the drilled piers will need to be cased or shielded during construction.”
